City of Kingston, New York
The City of Kingston is located in Ulster County, New York. Kingston NY is located 91 miles north of New York City along the Hudson River with a deep water natural harbor to the Hudson River via the Rondout Creek.
The village of Rondout grew as a shipping port for grain, bluestone and later of coal mined in Pennsylvania and brought to the harbor by way of the D&H canal. The coal was ship to ports along the east coast. The shipping industry brought wealth to the area for most of the 19th century. Today the Rondout Harbor area is florishing again with recreational boaters, resturants, artist and events held throughout the year.
The Stockade area of Kingston NY is equally historic. First named Esopus after a local Indian tribe then changed to Wiltwyck. It was originally a Dutch settlement. The stockade area gets its name from walls built around the area to protect the inhabitants from the Esopus Indians.
In 1777 Kingston became the first capital of New York State. It was promptly burned by British troops moving up the Hudson River, disembarking around the Rondout harbor area then called Ponck Hockie. The area was a major source of granary for the colonies at the time, so the British burned large amounts of wheat and the buildings. Many of the pre-revolutionary war stone buildings still stand in the stockade area. Including what many believe is the oldest 4 corners in the US, the corner of John and Crown streets where all 4 corners boast a pre-revolutionary stone building. The first senate building of New York still stands in Kingston and the burial place of New York’s first governor George Clinton can be found in the Old Dutch Church cemetery.
In 1872 the village of Rondout merged with the village of Kingston NY to form the present day City of Kingston.
