The area of present day Ulster County was called Esopus by the first European settlers. In 1652 Thomas Chambers a freeholder from Rensselearwyck purchased land at Esopus and began trading. In 1683, the Duke of York created twelve counties in his province. Ulster County was one of them. Its boundaries at that time included present day Sullivan, and portions of the Delaware, Orange and Greene Counties. In 1777, the first capital of New York State was established at Kingston, until the British burned the City. The county is rich in history and stone building still stand from the pre-revolutionary period.
Present day Ulster is rich is diversity. Once a grain producer for the colonies with its natural harbors along the Hudson River the area now welcomes artist and technology providers. It is a great weekend or even just a day’s getaway for New York City residence looks for a second home in the country of a visit to the many festivals that the county offers throughout the year. Skiing resorts surround the county in the Catskill Mountains. The Hudson River provides boating and the docks along the Rondout and Esopus creeks provide shelter for the boaters and entertainment.
