Selecting a school for your child is a monumental task. How do you select the best school?
There is public opinion, but of what value is that to your child’s specific needs? Is the public opinion based on facts or just hearsay passed along by circumstances that have change, maybe decades ago? Public opinion is not a very reliable test of a schools benefit to your child.
There are a lot of statistics, but are they meaningful and are they a measure of the schools performance or are they affected by other outside influences. If a school performance statistics are better than a neighboring school is this because the curriculum is better and the teachers perform better? Or is it because of the community and the parents influence, or simply the demographics of the areas. Perhaps the best teaches and curriculum exists at the lower performing school? But demographics created lower test scores for the student body while other are excelling.
What about the offerings at a school? Is your child talented in a specific area? Does the school have the programs your child needs to excel? Money usually plays an important part in school programs. Is there a good music department or athletic department or have they been cut do to budgetary constraints? Does your child have special needs, does they school offer a program to help?
So many question need to be asked. We strongly suggest that you make a list of what your expectations and your child’s goals. The statistics presented here are only a starting point. Call the school and discuss your expectation with them. Does your home work for your child’s benefit no one else can.
There is no easy way to determine any schools creditability for your child. It is a task that you must face mostly alone armed with as much information as you can obtain. Good Luck.
